Black Spruce Gallery
Goal:
Create five engaging long-form and short-form videos, highlighting five talented artists from Black Spruce Gallery. The videos will be displayed on Black Spruce Gallery’s website and shared across their social media platforms, including YouTube and Instagram.
Pre-production:
The pre-production phase holds immense significance in our workflow. During this stage, we engaged closely with the Black Spruce Gallery owners, gaining a deeper insight into their video objectives and digital platform strategies. Our approach involved extensive consultations with the gallery owners, artists, and meticulous storyboarding for each video. We invested time in understanding their video goals, artist profiles, filming locations, and production timelines. Our consultations brought us closer to understanding their envisioned final product, ensuring that the videos boosted their brand visibility and drove higher traffic to their website.
Concept:
Five artists shared their personal journeys into the world of art, giving us deeper insights into their backgrounds, artistic inspirations, how their artwork ties into nature, and the stories behind their creations. Through these long-form and short-form videos, we aimed to highlight the deep connection between their artistry and nature—a core mission of Black Spruce Gallery, dedicated to showcasing original fine art and fine craft from Saskatchewan and Canadian artists.
We produced, filmed and edited a 5-part artist series highlighting the following five artists from Black Spruce Gallery:
Cheryl Tuck-Tallon, Ken Wilkinson, Dawn Rogal, Cam Forrester, and Kathy Bradshaw.
Determining Locations:
We filmed four out of five videos right in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, at each artist’s studio. One artist’s studio was located at Christopher Lake, Saskatchewan, but we were more than happy to travel to capture their creative space.
Shot List and Content Selection:
Our approach to content selection was comprehensive. We included key elements that aligned with each artist’s unique story. By capturing them in their own studios, we were able to showcase their past and present works, dive into their artistic processes, explore their sources of inspiration, and film the materials they use.
Mood and Atmosphere:
Throughout the production of this series, we consistently contemplated, “What emotions should viewers experience when they watch these videos?” Three words resonated with us: “inspired,” “calm,” and “connected.” These guiding words influenced our choice of background music and colour grading, therefore ensuring these videos evoked the desired emotional response for their audience.
Finished Video Work:
All in all, we are absolutely thrilled with every aspect of this project. From planning, producing, filming, directing, editing, and delivering the final videos – we honestly couldn’t have been happier with the final result! Our heartfelt gratitude goes to Black Spruce Gallery for entrusting us with their vision, and our sincere appreciation extends to all the talented artists who collaborated with us to bring this project to life.
